Our children’s teeth are just as susceptible to decay and other problems as adults’ teeth are. At Sandy Lane Dental Practice we feel it is important to show your children how to care for their teeth from an early age, so they can enjoy having healthy teeth for life.

We would encourage you to bring your child with you to appointments from an early age, even before their teeth have come through, as this allows them to become familiar with the sights, smells and sounds of the practice.

Once they have their own teeth, we need to see them regularly for their own check-ups allowing us to keep a close eye on how their teeth are developing, and spot any potential issues as early as possible.

At each dental check-up, we will typically examine your teeth, gums and mouth.

We will also ask about:

  • your general oral health

  • any problems you have had with your teeth mouth or gums

  • teeth-cleaning habits

  • your diet

  • smoking and alcohol use

After your dental check-up, we will recommend a date for your next visit. The time to your next dental check-up could be as short as 3 months or as long as 1 year. People with good oral health will probably need to attend only once every 6 months but those with more problems will need dental check-ups more often.

Composite (White) Fillings

Fillings are one of the most basic methods of restoring teeth. They do exactly what their name suggests - they fill a hole in the tooth that has been caused by decay, playing an important role in helping us to keep a tooth for many more years.

In the past fillings were always made from either gold or a silver-coloured alloy called amalgam. Both these materials are extremely durable and in some circumstances they are still the best choice available. But they both have one disadvantage – they do not match the natural white teeth in appearance.

At Sandy Lane Dental Practice, we use the most effective, modern, tooth-coloured materials to enable you to have white fillings. Unlike the more traditional grey amalgam fillings, the tooth-coloured ones look very natural, so no-one will be able to tell you have them.

Inlays and onlays are two types of restorations used if you have a cavity in your tooth that needs to be filled. An inlay is a small filling that fits into the biting surface of a tooth while an onlay covers a larger area of the tooth and is better suited to bigger cavities.

Inlays and onlays are usually made from a tooth-coloured porcelain and can be made in a dental laboratory by a technician, with the help of impressions taken of your teeth. While these are being made, we will fit a temporary filling. When your inlay or onlay is ready we will remove the temporary filling and glue the inlay or inlay into place using a special adhesive.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a type of dental restoration used to fix teeth that have been broken, weakened by decay or have a very large filling. The crown fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. They can be tooth coloured giving the restoration a more natural appearance.

How long a crown lasts depends on how well it is looked after. It is important to keep this area just as clean as you would your natural teeth in order to prevent decay affecting the crown.

A dental bridge is used to fill the space where a tooth was removed or had fallen out. It is a false tooth that is held in place by being attached to the teeth next to it, like a bridge. The dental bridge helps to preserves the integrity of your existing teeth by preventing the shifting of teeth and jaw issues. It is recommended that a patient waits three months after a tooth is extracted before placing a bridge.

The procedure consists of several visits. Primarily, the tooth is usually reduced in size to fit the bridge. Then, an impression is taken, from which the dental lab makes the custom bridge. Finally, the bridge is permanently cemented in place.

Dental bridges ensure your smile remains healthy and attractive.

Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal treatments (Endodontics) are carried out when the inside of the tooth (the root or pulp) becomes infected or damaged. Infection and damage to the root can be very painful, creating inflammation with the risk of severe pain and swelling.

Root Canal Treatment eliminates the cause of the pain by completely removing the diseased or damaged tissue from the tooth. The root canal is meticulously cleaned, shaped and decontaminated, before securely filling it back up with a durable, inert material.

This means you can be pain free whilst still keeping your original tooth.

Wisdom Teeth: To Extract or Not to Extract?

Do I need my wisdom teeth removed?

As a dentist in Skelmersdale, we often get asked if patients need to have their wisdom teeth removed. Unfortunately, there's no one answer that fits everyone. Wisdom teeth can cause problems due to their location and size, leading to swelling, pain and infections. If they're impacted, it's often better to have them removed.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the back-most teeth, typically two upper and two lower. They can be large teeth and great for grinding up food. However, as we've evolved, our mouths have become smaller, leaving insufficient room for wisdom teeth. They usually erupt between ages 17-21, hence their name.

How do I know if I have them?

You'll typically know when your wisdom teeth are coming through. Minor pains are common as the tooth erupts. Your jaw can ache, and if the tooth comes through at an awkward angle, you may feel it rubbing against your cheek or tongue.

What Problems Do Wisdom Teeth Cause?

While many people have no problems with their wisdom teeth, others experience discomfort, pain, and swellings. Due to their location at the back of the mouth, they're difficult to clean, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Impacted wisdom teeth, which grow sideways and push against other teeth, can cause red, swollen, or bleeding gums, jaw pain, bad breath, or difficulty opening your mouth.

What's an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

If your wisdom tooth is impacted, it cannot grow into the correct position and may grow sideways. We can typically see which way they're growing or take an X-ray to check. Swellings around a wisdom tooth can happen at any time, causing the side of your face to become swollen, hot, red, and uncomfortable. At this stage, we usually recommend referring these to a Specialist to be extracted..

What happens if I need them extracted?

If you need your wisdom teeth extracted, we'll refer you to our oral surgeon. If the tooth is impacted, you may need a small cut in the gum to help remove it surgically. If all four wisdom teeth need extracting, we'll usually do one side of your mouth first, allowing you to eat on the other side while it heals. We use the latest X-ray technology to minimize risks, which we'll discuss with you.

What happens after surgery?

Our team at Sandy Lane Dental Practice will give you all the aftercare you need, including medication to help with healing. You can expect some discomfort around the area as the anesthetic wears off, swelling around the jaw, and sensitivity to hot or cold foods. We're always available to talk you through any issues, and you can call us anytime for reassurance or a chat.

Denplan is a private monthly payment plan that is an easy way of keeping up the great habit of regular check-ups with your dentist, so you'll always get expert advice about keeping your teeth in great condition and avoid any surprises.
