Discussion & Diagnosis

A large number of people will suffer from gum disease at some point in their life but they are frequently unaware of it. In some cases, it can be very destructive and may lead to early tooth loss if it is left undiagnosed and untreated. We take gum disease very seriously and our dental hygienist plays a huge role in its detection, monitoring and treatment.

Clean and Descale

A clean and healthy mouth not only improves your appearance and gives you fresh breath, regular appointments with a hygienist together with your homecare routine will ensure optimum dental health.

Whitening and Polish

The dental hygienist will professionally clean your teeth (usually called a scale and polish) and give you personalised advice on how to look after your teeth between visits. This will keep the build up of plaque to a minimum and keep your gums healthy and your mouth feeling fresh.

Your Personal Recommendation

Julie will make you a personalised oral hygiene plan to help you keep on top of your gum health at home. She will recommend which oral hygiene aids that will be best for your teeth and gums, and she will also advise on how often she recommends that you see her to keep your mouth healthy.

Hygiene FAQs

What is Hygiene treatment?

Hygiene treatment aims to prevent problems from occurring rather than simply fixing things when they go wrong. We recommend regular dental visits for examinations and hygiene treatments to ensure your mouth, teeth and gums remain in great condition.

Dental Hygienists have both clinical and health promotional responsibilities. Clinically they help to treat and prevent periodontal (gum) disease by scaling and polishing teeth; they can take dental radiographs and undertake monitoring and screening procedures. Dental Hygienists are also permitted to apply topical fluorides and fissure sealants in order to reduce dental caries (tooth decay).

Their Health Promotional role includes motivating and encouraging individuals and groups in oral health practices including oral hygiene and diet advice.

Why should you get Hygiene treatment?

Gum disease affects the gums, bone and ligaments that support your teeth. These structures are the foundations which enable you to keep your teeth for life, but they can be damaged by bacterial infection. If this is if left untreated it can progress into a more serious condition, called periodontitis.

Simple steps like brushing twice a day, flossing, and having a thorough periodontal evaluation from your dentist at least once a year can help detect and prevent gum disease.

Typically, gum disease does not cause pain until it’s in an advanced stage, at which point much of the damage has been done and tooth support destroyed. That's why its important you visit us for regular dental check-ups so we diagnose, treat and manage your overall oral healthcare needs.
